A stroll through Philadelphia in the 1960s

Journey through the streets of Philadelphia during a decade when people burned leaves in the street and fish was poor peoples’ food. Children went to the corner store to buy Johnny Smokers. Most women were stay-at-home wives and mothers. While the riots burned down Columbia Avenue, there was a good time in the dance halls and ballrooms. No summer was complete without Atlantic City’s Chicken Bone Beach.
Live music, the front porch, good home cooked food filled the lives of many people who were fighting for equality, but had fulfilling lives and acquired upward mobility, in spite of the odds.
